War is Hell … Cluster munitions likely headed for Ukraine
”For more than six months, President Biden and his aides have been wrestling with one of the most vexing questions in the war in Ukraine: whether to risk letting Ukrainian forces run out of the artillery rounds they desperately need to fight Russia, or agree to ship them cluster munitions — widely banned weapons known to cause grievous injury to civilians, especially children. On Thursday, Mr. Biden appeared on the verge of providing the cluster munitions to Ukraine, a step that would sharply separate him from many of his closest allies, who have signed an international treaty banning the use, stockpiling or transfer of such weapons.
“Several of Mr. Biden’s top aides, including Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, recommended he make the move at a meeting of top national security officials last week, despite what they have described as their own deep reservations, people familiar with the discussions said. They requested anonymity to discuss sensitive deliberations.”
This entire unfortunate situation makes me wonder- with the world's largest military budget, we didn't have a decent reserve of regular ammunition or the ability to quickly ramp up production? What if we had needed it for a war of our own, rather than sending the stuff to Ukraine?
A zillion-dollar budget for every conceivable type of expensive war toy but not enough ammunition? This situation didn't develop overnight- what the hell is going on here?
Well said OJ. Greatest military power on the planet doesn’t have “enough ammunition”? All those mega-million dollar defense contractors couldn’t gear up production during a war that’s been going on over a year? WTF? Who screwed up?
We need more ammunition in the hands of the military and less on the streets of our cities - IMHO.
Superior planning, everywhere you turn. During the Civil War, a citizen from S.C. wrote to his Rep. in the Confed. Congress in Richmond, with the question: "Pardon me, but is the majority ALWAYS drunk?"
And on top of that NYT report, I just heard that neither can Europe send enough help to Ukraine. YEARS before supply catches up with demand. Jayzuz.
