“No idea more un-American than the notion that any one American could choose the American President”

edited February 2022 in Off-Topic
Mike Pence’s full sentence reads:

“And frankly, there is no idea more un-American than the notion that any one American could choose the American president.”

Anyone here ever think we’d even be debating this proposition 5 or 10 years ago?

  • Yet here we are.
  • Karl Rove comes to mind. It is important when making a President that you make sure they have little experience and reputation to recommend them for the job. It is also important that when the voters go home, you and your cronies (e.g. PNAC during Bush 2) maintain control over your mannequin's wires. Most power wielders have no interest in anything other than power and control. The public, staring with singular attention at the mannequin, provides opportunity (e.g. WMD as a means to manifest destiny). Carisma is far more important than knowledge. Thus, through history have invisible agendas shaped the world about them using patriotism, religion, material gain, and other short-term incentives.
