As Brazil faces record Covid-19 deaths, and a variant-fueled surge, Bolsonaro Disparages Masks

While epidemiologists and health officials warn of a worsening crisis in the weeks ahead, Mr. Bolsonaro took aim at masks during his weekly address on Facebook Thursday. Citing an unspecified German study, the president said masks were bad for children and that wearing them could lead to headaches, difficulty concentrating and a “decreased perception of happiness.”

Mr. Bolsonaro has been criticized at home and abroad for his cavalier response to the coronavirus pandemic. He has questioned the use of quarantine measures, social distancing and has sowed doubts about vaccines, saying he does not intend to get a shot.....

....This week, Brazil’s Covid death toll surpassed 250,000, which is second only to the U.S. count of more than 500,000 deaths. The Brazilian health minister, Eduardo Pazuello, said on Thursday that the country had entered a “new stage of the pandemic” as a result of variants that he said are three times more contagious than earlier strains of the virus. “That is the reality we’re living today in Brazil,” he said.

    Bolsonaro would be comic if not so tragic.

    Good read in the WSJ today on this. Brazil’s new Covid variant P.1 is approximately twice as aggressive at infecting people than the earlier strains of Covid and is hitting the 30-40 year old segment of Brazil’s population especially hard. Problem: If you don’t control the earlier virus forms it will keep mutating into more and more lethal forms. In time this will migrate to other Latin American nations and eventually North America.

    That is why it is crucial to get US vaccinated quickly so to slowdown the spread of these infectious variants. Less than 50M American has been vaccinated (15% of 340 M population). Also having FEMA involved will speed up the logistics in order of getting the vaccine to the patients.

    Last summer Bolsonaro was infected with COVID-19 and found fungus in his lungs. He recovered afterward but I wonder if he is one of the long hauler who has long lasting health issue, i.e. limited lung capacity resulting from scar tissues and autoimmune
    disease.
