Mortgage relief was offered, but at a high price

You might alert this to anyone you're aware of that has or is considering filing for mortgage relief. Written by Michelle Singletary at the Washington Post.

"Homeowners who fell behind on mortgage payments were told they had to come up with enormous lump sums at the end of their forbearance. It wasn’t true."

  • For 30% of mortgage holders it may be true. The WP article says that forbearance under the CARES act is only available to those with federally backed mortgages. That's70% of the market. The other 30% of homeowners may still have some protection under state laws.

"Ultimately, however, [non-government backed mortgage] loan investors determine the options available to customers after the forbearance period — and in which order those options are presented to customers."
