@Crash Thanks for the update. Hawaii has quite a challenge ahead of it since it is soooo dependent on tourism to supports it economy.

A note about the "small town" island of Molokai with it 8000 person population and its 15 bed hospital (a very vulnerable situation). Friendly Market, one of two "major" markets (really just small, neighborhood markets with hugely tight and packed isles) has been reopened after a two week shutdown due to coronavirus.

    Yesterday's news:

Video clip from a couple of weeks ago (with a view of the main street in the only town of any size on the island):

  • A family member who lives on Oahu mentioned any visitor to HI would need to quarantine for 14 days...That would be one reason.
  • @bee Tourists are now even being paid to leave....
Hawaii's tourism industry, which normally welcomes tourists to the popular vacation destination, is offering visitors who disobey the state's self-quarantine order a financial incentive to leave.

"So far, with $25,000 in funding from the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawai‘i or VASH has paid to send 19 people back to their airports of origin during the COVID-19 crisis," the state health department said in its daily news digest Thursday.

  • Thanks for that update. Yes, mandatory 14-days alone in your hotel room, or your home, if you're flying back to your own residence. People are being PAID to LEAVE? The absurdity defies comprehension. That's... um... how best to put this...? That's batshit crazy. Oh, the games people play. Even with good intentions.

@davfor Do you have to fly into Maui, then take the ferry to Molokai, when you come?
  • edited April 2020
@Crash No. I fly -- sometimes direct from Maui or Oahu and sometimes with a brief stop in Lanai. Last time, I used Mokulele Airlines both ways to and from Honolulu. Here is a video clip that shows their terminals in Molokai and Honolulu and the type of airplanes they fly...no TSA security screening is required! (Based on what this report said, I was apparently one of the last tourists to leave the island in March.)

  • Interesting! @davfor. Wonder what uncle frikkin' Larry paid to own 98% of Lanai?????
