Twitter to Ban All Political Advertising, Raising Pressure on Facebook

edited October 2019 in Off-Topic
“It’s not credible for us to say: ‘We’re working hard to stop people from gaming our systems to spread misleading info, buuut if someone pays us to target and force people to see their political ad…well...they can say whatever they want!’” - Jack Dorsey, Twitter CEO

    - I’ve been arguing that for quite some time.

    - I think folks have been remarkably restrained considering the charged political atmosphere that currently exists outside these relatively tranquil corners.

    - Haven’t visited Twitter in a long time. Time to take another look.

@Ted - I’ll echo your three cheers for: Dorsey, Twitter, and MFO.

I've been saying for some time now that the easiest and best solution to this problem is exactly what Twitter has just done. Zuckerberg is correct- he should not be placed in the position of deciding what is true, false, or dubious with respect to political advertising or commentary. Simply declare that Facebook is off limits to all political commentary, and let political advertisers set up their own internet sites for those who want that sort of thing.

Absolutely true. Maybe a few indirect low-key snipes here and there, but haven't seen an outright political post here in a long time. And that's just fine with me.
  • Twitter said it was banning political ads, not political Tweets--two very different things.
  • Very true!
