When Value Stocks Trail Growth, Dividends Can Help

FYI: Although value stocks have enjoyed a recent resurgence and have outperformed growth names, the longer-term trends are much starker.

Consider: While the Russell 1000 Value Index is up 4.6% since Sept. 1 compared with 3.8% for its growth counterpart, the five-year annual return of the value index was recently 8% compared with 13.6% for the growth benchmark.

Dividend stocks, however, may be able to help narrow the performance gap for a value investor. But whether a company pays a dividend isn’t the only factor to consider.
