The Breakfast Briefing: Stocks Rally On U.S.-China Trade Talk Hopes

FYI: U.S. stock futures were solidly higher Friday morning after President Donald Trump made positive remarks on the U.S.-China trade talks.

Around 6:20 a.m. ET, Dow futures indicated a positive open of nearly 300 points. Futures on the S&P and Nasdaq were both higher.

Trump told reporters on Thursday that talks between the two countries were going “really well.” His comments came after he tweeted that he would meet with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He at the White House on Friday.

Global stocks rose Friday amid hopes of progress in U.S.-China trade negotiations, with a meeting scheduled between Chinese officials and President Trump.

The Stoxx Europe 600 index rose 0.7%, led by gains in the technology and banking sectors. Asian indexes also climbed, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gauge advancing 2.3%, while the Nikkei 225 rose 1.2% and the Shanghai Composite gained 0.9%. U.S. stock futures also posted advances.

In commodity markets, crude oil prices gained following reports of an explosion on an Iranian oil tanker close to Saudi Arabia. Brent crude oil, the global benchmark, jumped 1.8% to $60.14 a barrel. The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions in the Middle East.

The British pound, which posted its largest one-day jump since March on Thursday following signs of progress in the Brexit talks between the U.K. and Ireland, added 0.1% against the dollar.

Later Friday, the University of Michigan will release a U.S. consumer sentiment measure that is likely to signal dimming expectations about the economic outlook. Investors will be watching the data to see if consumers are nervous enough to potentially curtail spending in the crucial months ahead.

Ted
