Money Managers Take Cues From ‘Moneyball’ Playbook

FYI: Billy Beane’s unexpected success as general manager of the unfancied Oakland Athletics baseball team spawned an analytical arms race among US sports teams, with each desperate to find an edge over rivals by wading through unconventional statistics.

Working under a limited budget, Mr Beane used obscure statistics to identify undervalued players, eventually building a team that routinely beat rivals who had outspent them many times over.

The fund management industry is no stranger to data analysis, but the sheer quantity of information produced in the past few years has created similarly fierce competition among big investment groups. It is a common estimate among data scientists that up to 90 per cent of the world’s data were generated in the past two years.
