Owning defensive stock sectors like utilities, real estate, and consumer staples has been a winning strategy over the past years as concerns about global growth have buffeted economically sensitive cyclical sectors. Real estate stocks, for instance, have returned 18.2% during the past 12 months, while utilities have returned 16.1%, and consumer staples have returned 12.6%. The S&P 500 has returned a meager 1.9% during the same period.
