The Closing Bell: U.S. Stocks Tread Water: Still Another Trifecta Close On Dow, 500, NASDAQ

edited July 2019 in The Bullpen
FYI: U.S. stocks drifted around the flatline Monday, pressured by losses among shares of energy and industrial companies.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 27 points, or 0.10%, to 27359. The S&P 500 was up 0.2% and the Nasdaq Composite added 0..17%.

Citigroup shares edged up 0.3% after the bank exceeded analysts’ estimates for both profits and revenue, but delivered mixed results for its trading unit. Analysts will get a look at earnings results from JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo on Tuesday and other big banks later this week.

Meanwhile, Boeing ’s stock fell 1.2%, shaving roughly 30 points off the Dow industrials, after some Federal Aviation Administration officials and pilot-union leaders suggested the company’s 737 MAX planes are unlikely to be ready to carry passengers again until 2020.

Energy shares followed crude oil prices lower, with Cimarex Energy and Noble Energy losing more than 4% apiece.

Trading was relatively subdued in other markets Monday, with the Stoxx Europe 600 ending up 0.2%.

Anheuser-Busch InBev lost 0.6% after calling off the nearly $10 billion listing of its Asian business late last week. The listing would have been the largest initial public offering yet this year.

Stock indexes in Asia ended the day mixed after data showed Chinese economic activity slowed to its weakest pace since 1992, raising expectations that Beijing would introduce stimulus measures to support the economy. Growth in the world’s second-largest economy decelerated to 6.2% in the second quarter.
