Southwest Extends Boeing 737 Max Cancellations to September

edited June 2019 in Off-Topic

  • Excellent choice by Southwest. Example of corporate greed on behalf of Boeing. The pilot control software package is an "add-on" option. Can you imagine air bag is optional in cars sold today?

After two crashes that point to this software, Boeing is making this a standard package in all 737 Max aircraft. Is safety on the top of all design engineering of aircraft industries?

ISTM this is merely a reflection of scheduling realities having little to do with SWA being extra cautious.
Boeing has not yet conducted a certification test flight that is required before it can submit the software fix and training upgrade for approval [it is now mid June and counting] ...

On Wednesday, American Airlines Chief Executive Doug Parker said he believed it was “highly likely” that the MAX would be flying again by mid-August. He said the decision to keep the planes off the airline’s schedule into early September merely reflected monthly scheduling plans for crew.

[text rearranged for continuity of excerpts]
Once the FAA approves the MAX for flight, Southwest has said it would take [its airline] about 30 days to get the jets up and running again.
  • Re: Southwest: this MAX issue has seriously curtailed their scheduling of flights from my home airport (BDL) to a favorite annual summer destination to visit friends (GEG.) Which is to say that due to supply and demand, the price of a ticket is crazy-high these days. I have to cross the border, anyway, so I'm looking at flights to Calgary (YYC) and also Kalispell, MT. (FCA.)
  • "Boeing’s CEO Dennis Muilenburg on Monday [June 3] said ... he expects that the planes will get a green light to fly again by the end of the year, but declined to provide a timeline."

It may not be just summer you'll be waiting out, but autumn as well. Well, there's always HSR (9B trips without a passenger casualty), especially for the short hops that the 737 was originally designed for. Oh, wait ...

  • @hank, @OJ, Not related to the 737 but in case you missed it

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 crash likely intentional
  • ....But we figured that. Eh? Nutjob co-pilot... That's been known.
  • Yeah, that was always a good bet.
