The Breakfast Briefing: Markets Regain Footing After Bout Of Volatility

FYI: European stocks rose Thursday and bond yields bounced higher, providing a sense of relief after several jittery days in markets over fears of a slowing global economy.

In Europe, the Stoxx Europe 600 was up 0.5%, trimming some of the losses it suffered Wednesday.

In the U.S., futures pointed to opening rises of 0.3% for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and 0.4% for the S&P 500.

In Asia, however, the Shanghai Stock Exchange was down 0.3% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropped 0.4%. Japan’s Nikkei was down 0.3%.

For days, markets have been dropping, threatening a possible end to their bullish run as investors sold stocks and sought safety in bonds.

The Bank of Canada, meanwhile, kept interest rates unchanged and said a broad improvement in domestic economic activity had reinforced its view that a slowdown that began in late 2018 was temporary.

The more positive mood helped lift bank stocks in Europe. Deutsche Bank , which is down over 10% this year, was up 1%.

German publishing group Axel Springer was the biggest gainer of the Stoxx Europe 600 after the company said late Wednesday that private-equity investor KKR & Co. and the Springer family were considering a bid to take the company private. Shares were up 21%.

Looking ahead, investors awaited the second reading of first-quarter U.S. economic growth later Thursday. The first reading showed gross domestic product rose at a 3.2% annual rate despite slowing consumer and business spending. UniCredit said in a note that it expects growth to be revised down to “a still healthy” 2.9%.

Global benchmark Brent crude oil was flat at $67.90 a barrel. Gold prices, which tend to rise when investors are worried, were down 0.4%.
