The Breakfast Briefing: U.S. Stocks Set To Open Higher As Investors Await Jobs Data

FYI: U.S. futures looked set to open higher Friday as investors awaited U.S. jobs data for the latest clues on the strength of the American economy.

The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average were expected to open 0.3% higher. Nasdaq-100 futures were up 0.5%. All major U.S. indexes closed lower Thursday after sharp falls in the price of oil prompted a selloff in energy stocks.

Strong earnings from some of Europe’s largest companies supported modest gains for indexes in the region. London-listed HSBC gained 2.7% and France’s Société Générale added 2.6% after both lenders first-quarter earnings beat analysts’ expectations. The pan-continental Stoxx Europe 600 index rose 0.3% by midday. The index’s banks subindex rose 0.4%.

n Asia, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was flat after reversing earlier session losses. South Korea’s Kospi, however, fell 0.7%, dragged down by a 1.3% fall in Samsung shares.

Oil prices fell nearly 3% on Thursday as investors fretted over a possible supply glut. Selling pressure continued early on Friday, with Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, falling 0.5% to $70.38 a barrel.

U.S. government bond prices edged lower after falling in the previous session. Yields on U.S. Treasury 10-year bonds, which move inversely to the price, were at 2.560% after settling at 2.552% on Thursday.

The dollar edged up slightly with the U.S. dollar index rising 0.1% to 97.97, while gold was steady at $1,270.13 a troy ounce.
