The Closing Bell: S&P 500 Rises For Seventh Straight Session

The Closing Bell will be updated sometime after 4:00 PM CDST to include the latest updates from IBD and Bloomberg Evening Briefing.)

FYI: The S&P 500 climbed for the seventh trading session in a row after a positive but mostly as-expected jobs report, capping a quiet week of trading in which stocks crept higher.

The index's winning streak, a cumulatively significant 3% rise through Friday afternoon, has been largely without a central catalyst. Many traders say they had been waiting to make substantial moves until Friday’s Labor Department report and the start of earnings season next week. Trading volumes in the past week have plumbed the lowest levels of the year.

The jobs report did little to embolden investors and traders to make big bets. Stocks moved slightly higher in Friday trading, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average adding 40 points, or 0.15%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.46%. The Nasdaq Composite performed the best, up 0.59%, buoyed by rising biotechnology stocks. All three indexes are on pace for weekly gains of at least 1.9%.

The S&P finishing higher, marked the longest winning streak for the index since October 2017, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

Yields on the 10-year Treasury note were essentially unchanged at 2.508%. Bond yields move inversely to prices.

European gains were muted, with the pan-continental Stoxx Europe 600 inching up less than 0.1%. The German DAX index lagged behind other regional indexes as positive data on the nation’s industrial production failed to allay investors’ concerns about its economy.

Ten of the eleven S&P 500 Sectors led by Energy and Utilities were gainers, the one loser was Materials.

Ted
