The Breakfast Briefing: Global Stocks Pause As Economic Doubts Persist

FYI: Global stocks paused on Wednesday amid lingering concerns around the possibility of a global economic slowdown.

Europe’s Stoxx Europe 600 was mostly flat. In Asia, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.6%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 slid 0.2%.

U.S. futures pointed to a positive open. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was set to edge 0.2% higher, while the S&P 500 was set to gain 0.3%.

Concerns over a disorderly Brexit lingered in Europe, though analysts agreed that uncertainty is mostly priced in to markets for the moment. U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May faces the daunting task of getting her Conservative Party to back an unchanged withdrawal agreement after it was defeated twice in Parliament.

U.K. lawmakers have voted to take control of the process, and they’re set to vote on a number of indicative measures to break the deadlock. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 stock index edged up 0.1% as the British pound slid 0.1% against the U.S. dollar to $1.3194.

The WSJ Dollar Index, which measures the greenback against 16 of its peers, gained 0.2%. The yield on 10-year U.S. Treasurys on Tuesday crept lower to 2.387%, from 2.418% on Monday. Yields move inversely to prices.

Brent crude was nearly flat at $67.40 a barrel, while gold edged up 0.1% to $1,315.60 an ounce.

Ted
