8 Best Growth Stocks to Buy for 2019

Feb. 27, 2019

A recent survey by the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank found that economists expect U.S. GDP growth to slow from 3 percent in 2018 to just 2.4 percent in 2019. Investors will need to look even harder to find growth companies for their portfolios as the economy slows.

Growth stocks have left value stocks in the dust throughout the decade-long bull market, but stocks like the popular FANG group have struggled in recent quarters. Morningstar classifies these eight stocks as growth stocks, and each of the stocks has either four- or five-star ratings on Morningstar’s five-star rating scale.

1. Adobe (ticker: ADBE). Over the last nine quarters, Adobe has consistently reported revenue growth of greater than 20 percent. Analyst Ali Mogharabi says Adobe’s international business exceeded expectations last quarter, and the company’s digital media and digital experience businesses have been particularly strong growth sources.

Adobe’s large acquisitions of Magento and Marketo have demonstrated the company’s willingness to supplement its growth via mergers and acquisitions. However, Mogharabi has been particularly impressed by Adobe’s organic revenue growth. Morningstar has a “fairly valued” rating and $300 fair value estimate for ADBE stock.

2. Cerner Corp. (CERN). Cerner is the largest standalone health care IT company in the U.S. Analyst Anna Baran says Cerner is deeply entrenched in the complex health care system, and competitors have a large barrier to entry into the market.

Given increasing regulation and changing reimbursement structures, health care providers are constantly being forced to update their IT systems. Customer switching costs are prohibitively high. Baran says increasingly complex Medicare reporting and regulatory requirements to update electronic medical records will continue to drive demand. Morningstar has an “undervalued” rating and $66 fair value estimate for CERN stock. – Wayne Duggan

Meet your short-term investment goals. Investing is one of the best ways to build wealth over time, so continuing to put money in retirement accounts makes sense. Weight Watchers falls after profit warning. Oprah Winfrey stands to see the value of her investment in Weight Watchers (WTW) shrink after the company said it hasn't signed up as many subscribers as it hoped this winter and expects its profits to suffer. Weight Watchers International's stock tumbled more than 30 percent in after-hours trading Tuesday. If that carries over into regular-session trading today, it would translate to a paper loss of about $50 million for Winfrey.

Home Depot stock takes a hit. Strains in the nation's housing sector, coupled with nasty weather across the U.S., took their toll on Home Depot's (HD) sales in the last few months of 2018. In the fourth quarter, Home Depot Inc. fell short on profit, revenue and same-stores sales as rising real estate prices cast a chill over U.S. home sales.
