Before the storm: What posters at MFO were saying in late August

edited February 2019 in The OT Bullpen
During the last week of August 2018 the question of bear market funds arose. Some discussion board participants sensed danger in the markets. Others did not. From August 24, 2018: https://mutualfundobserver.com/discuss/discussion/43004/7-bear-market-funds

U.S. stock markets topped 5-weeks later: “The Dow Jones Industrial Average's highest closing record is 26,828.39, set on October 3, 2018. It followed a record set the previous day.” https://www.thebalance.com/dow-jones-closing-history-top-highs-and-lows-since-1929-3306174

December 21 the market ended its worst week in 10 years, with the Dow closing at 23,445. That represented a drop of 12.6% from the October high. The NASDAQ fared worse during that period, tumbling nearly 20% from its October high. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/21/us-stocks-set-for-lower-week-after-fed-decision-government-shutdown-fears.html

Stumbled upon this old MFO thread while researching one of my own funds as occasionally happens. Sometimes it’s insightful to look back.
