The Closing Bell: Nasdaq Prepares To Exit Bear Market As Stocks Rally

edited February 2019 in The Bullpen
FYI: The new year rally in technology stocks lifted the Nasdaq Composite toward its eighth consecutive weekly rise, putting the index on track to exit the bear market it entered in late 2018.

Tech companies have largely reported fourth-quarter results that exceeded expectations, while easing fears among investors about trade tensions and rapid interest-rate increases have also propelled the index higher. The Nasdaq is on course to close more than 20% above its Christmas Eve low, which would mark a new bull-market run.

On Friday, the Nasdaq rose 0.61% as investors embraced signs of progress in the U.S.-China trade negotiations. It has risen roughly 18% over the past eight weeks, its largest eight-week gain since May 2009.

All three major U.S. stock indexes are on pace to end the week up more than 2%. The Dow industrials are also on pace for their eighth consecutive week of gains, rising more than 13% through Thursday—their best eight-week stretch since September 2009.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 444 points, or 1.75%, Friday, while the S&P 500 added 0.1.09%.

All eleven of the S&P 500 Sectors, led by Financials had a positive day

Ted
