FYI: After a rocky end to 2018, financial markets celebrated the new year with a vengeance last month. Aided by healthy earnings and accommodative Federal Reserve policy, the S&P 500 index ended January with a 7.9% gain, which was its best January showing in 30 years; the index had closed 2018 down 4.4%. The Dow rose 7.2% in January, while the Nasdaq was up 9.7%.
