FYI: The Dow Jones Industrial Average stabilized Wednesday, boosted by a batch of strong earnings.
The blue-chip index closed up 171 points, or 0.8%, at 24575, after opening up nearly 300 points then turning negative in midday trading.
The S&P 500 inched up less than 0..22%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite was up 0.08%.
The moves came after all three indexes on Tuesday notched their largest one-day point and percentage declines since Jan. 3 and snapped four-day winning streaks. The gauges entered Wednesday well below last year’s records but up 12% or more since Christmas Eve.
The S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq Composite Index on Tuesday notched their largest one-day point and percentage declines since Jan. 3.
Fears about slowing global growth, particularly in China, have swung markets in recent weeks as analysts fear demand for a wide range of commodities and products will weaken this year. Analysts were weighing falling materials prices against several stronger-than-expected earnings Wednesday, sparking swings for major indexes.
Seven of the eleven S&P 500 Sectors, led by Consumer Staples and Utilities were in positive territory.

Ted
