The Closing Bell: U.S. Stocks Rise, Lifted by Tech Sector, China Optimism

FYI: Rising shares of technology companies pulled major U.S. indexes higher, as optimism about Chinese stimulus helped put stocks on track to notch their first day of gains in three trading sessions.

Shares of technology manufacturers and other companies led the stock market higher after representatives of the People’s Bank of China said they would step up efforts to spur economic growth this year, reversing some of the heavy losses the sector suffered in recent months as trade tensions and tepid economic growth in Asia pressured shares of those businesses.

A handful of upbeat fourth-quarter earnings reports, with the latest coming from UnitedHealth Group , also have helped to tamp down some of the brewing concern around the health of corporate profits.

The S&P 500 added 1.07% in recent trading, with shares of tech and communications companies in the broad index each gaining more than 1%. The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.71%.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, meanwhile, added 155 points, or 0.65%, to 23908.

All three indexes, which were on track for their first day of gains following two consecutive sessions of losses, remained in positive territory following British Parliament’s overwhelming rejection of a proposed Brexit deal Tuesday.

Nine of the eleven S&P 500 Sectors were in positive territory led by Healthcare, Communication Services, and Technology, while Industrials, and Materials finished in the red.

Ted
