FYI: Many years ago, a headhunter set me up with a job interview at the German insurer Allianz . The interview went well, and the headhunter told me the company was ready to offer me the position. I said no thanks. I told her I knew that Allianz was well respected, but the more I thought about it, the more I was bothered by its historical connection to the Holocaust.
About 10 years later, I worked as a freelancer on a project with Allianz (ticker: ALV.Germany). I reasoned that the job was only temporary, but also that Allianz had redeemed itself, having paid Holocaust victims reparations, and that it also had proved to be an environmentally sustainable corporation.
How long does it take to forgive a company for egregious behavior? While many financial experts claim that investing should be apolitical, for professional investors with socially responsible or environmental, social, and governance, or ESG, mandates, the answer isn’t simple. For them, there is an implicit problem with putting profits before people or the planet, and when a company, which may still be a good financial investment, does something terrible, it must redeem itself to justify owning it.

Ted
