FYI: Wednesday’s 5% rise for the S&P 500 shocked investors out of their holiday relaxation. But such large moves aren’t as rare as you might think: The index has gained more than 4.5% in a single day on 24 occasions in the past 40 years and dropped at least that much a total of 29 times.
