The Closing Bell: Stocks Pare Losses In Volatile Session After Record Surge: 800 Point Turnaround

edited December 2018 in The Bullpen
FYI: U.S. stocks staged a big comeback heading into Thursday’s closing bell, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average swinging about 800 points to continue a rocky December in the stock market.

The blue-chip index added 260 points, or 1.1%, to 23,138 after earlier dropping as much as 611 points. The S&P 500 gained 0.85%, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.38%.

The gains come a day after the Dow logged its biggest-ever point gain, surging more than 1,000 points. The volatility and massive moves in December have been dizzying—the Dow industrials has risen in just six of the 17 trading days in December so far.

After starting well, 2018 turned out to be a horrible year for markets. Will 2019 be any better? WSJ's James Mackintosh and Riva Gold chart the outlook.

The Dow had tumbled more than 1,800 points over the four trading days through Christmas Eve, only to recoup a massive chunk of that in a postholiday rally. All told the Dow has lost more than 1,300 points through that stretch.

All eleven of the S&P 500 Sectors finished in the green
