The Closing Bell: Stocks Push Higher After Four-Session Slide: Dow Up Over 1,000 Points

edited December 2018 in The Bullpen
FYI: U.S. stocks surged Wednesday, rebounding after a bruising four-session selloff put the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 on the brink of a bear market.

The blue-chip index climbed 1,086 points, or 4.9%, to 22303. The S&P 500 added 4.9% and the Nasdaq Composite rose 5.8%. All of the 11 sectors in the S&P 500 notched gains, led by the consumer-discretionary and technology groups that powered the index higher for much of the year.

Sales in the 2018 U.S. holiday shopping season rose 5.1 percent to over $850 billion, the strongest in six years, according to a Mastercard report. The S&P 500 retailing index .SPXRT jumped 5.4 percent, while shares of online retailer Amazon (AMZN.O), which touted a “record-breaking” season, climbed 6.9 percent.

The rally comes after the Dow industrials and the S&P 500 tumbled more than 2.5% Monday, their worst-ever performances on Christmas Eve. Markets were closed Tuesday for Christmas, and most European indexes remained shut Wednesday for Boxing Day.

The S&P 500 Sectors were in solid green numbers, led by Consumer Discretionary up 6.2%, Energy 6.2% and Technology 6.0%

Ted
