New ETF Rules Will Expand What Funds Can Own

FYI: The market may be in no mood for a new wave of exchange-traded funds. But the Securities and Exchange Commission is plowing ahead with proposals to streamline rules for funds of funds, making it easier for fresh varieties of ETFs to launch.

The SEC’s latest rule changes would impact funds of funds, such as ETFs that hold other funds in a multiasset strategies, gaining exposure to bonds, real estate securities, stocks, and other types of securities through cross-fund ownership. Many ETFs and mutual funds already do this within the same fund complex, and the new rules wouldn’t have much impact on those products.
