FYI: The Oakmark International fund, managed by longtime contrarian David Herro, reopened to investors this week. It’s the latest value fund focused on foreign stocks to do so amid a brutal year in global markets—and a particularly difficult stretch for value managers. It could be fortuitous timing for investors seeking bargain hunters to pick through the recent market carnage.
Foreign markets have been the epicenter of turmoil, hit by slowing economic growth and concerns about Brexit, Italy’s debt, and trade wars. The MSCI AC World ex-US index has fallen 12% this year, double the losses in the MSCI US index. A two-year streak of monthly flows into international equity funds, totaling $235 billion, ended in November when investors yanked out $1.4 billion, according to EPFR Global.
