Worried About ETFs Exacerbating A Market Downturn? Don’t. Here’s Why.

FYI: Over the course of the long bull market, people have fretted that exchange-traded funds would exacerbate any market decline. The hypothesis: ETFs are so liquid that when investors dump them in a selloff, the securities within them would fall even further.

Martin Small, head of BlackRock ’s iShares, which has $1.5 trillion in ETF assets, says that recent market activity should reassure skeptics that the funds won’t trigger a disaster.
