Here's What To Do If An ETF Issuer Decides To Close Your Fund

FYI: As the ETF industry's growth in recent years attests to, ETF issuers have been more than happy to comply with investors' appetite for new products.

Environmental, social and governance (ESG), artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, fixed income, factor, sector or smart-beta investing have contributed to the accelerating growth of the ETF industry.

But what gets less coverage is that not all ETFs survive. Some of them do indeed close — whether through liquidation or delisting. While it's considered healthy to see fund closures in a maturing market, they can expose investors to additional risks.

Investors seeking a tool to help evaluate an ETF's likelihood of closing can check out InvestWithAnEdge.com's monthly ETF Deathwatch list. The report uses criteria such a fund's age, assets and average daily volume to screen for those vulnerable to closing. As of October, there were 425 ETFs and ETNs (exchange traded notes) on the list. Five ETFs closed during the month.
