The Closing Bell: S&P Down For Fifth Day As Financials Fall: Apple Flirts With Bear Territory

FYI: Declines in technology and internet stocks, and lingering worries about slowing global growth dragged U.S. stocks lower again Wednesday.

For the second straight session, major indexes attempted to stage a rebound shortly after the opening bell but fell short. They opened modestly higher but turned lower without a clear catalyst.

The Dow industrials fell 205 points, or 0.81%, to 25081, while the S&P 500 also fell 0.76%. Both indexes tumbled Monday and closed lower Tuesday. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slumped 0.90% after rising about 1% shortly after the opening bell.

Outsize declines in technology and internet stocks have stoked broader volatility in recent weeks. Some analysts worry that revenue growth for those companies might be peaking, removing a key source of support for U.S. stocks.

Apple Inc. tumbled more than 2 percent, epitomizing the struggles in megacap tech shares that have long driven the bull market

Banks fell after Democrat Maxine Waters, poised to become chair of the U.S. House banking committee, said regulations would not be eased any further on her watch, according to a CNBC report.

“When Waters came up that had a profound impact on the markets and right about the time the S&P went negative.
