World War I, which ended 100 years ago this week, killed 10 million men in fighting that involved 32 countries around the globe. It was supposed to be the “war to end all wars,” but the opposite turned out to be true: The bitter combat of 1914-18 hatched a series of new wars, and it has continued to influence the way wars are fought down to the present day.
