FYI: Value investing is the concept of buying stocks that trade below their intrinsic value, and believing that one day the gap will be realized in the market. Value as a factor has a history of outperforming the market over the long run, but you wouldn’t know that from looking at recent returns.
Value stocks have underperformed over the past decade, as investors plowed their money into highflying tech companies. During the market’s recent selloff, however, there were signs of a comeback. While the S&P 500 has dropped 8.9% in October, the S&P 500 Value index has fallen 5%. The S&P 500 Growth index—home to Apple (AAPL), Amazon.com (AMZN), and the other FAANGs—has declined 6.8%.
