FYI: The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged higher as a rare intervention by Chinese financial regulators soothed fears over weak economic growth in the country.
The blue-chip index added 62 points, or 0.2%, to 25,444 in recent trading, a bounce that put the Dow on track for weekly gains after a bruising day Thursday. The broader S&P 500 was mostly flat, losing less than 0.1%.
The Nasdaq Composite, meanwhile, fell 0.3%, on pace for its third consecutive session of losses, as sliding shares of eBay pulled the tech-heavy index lower.
The broader stock-market gains came on the heels of an eventful trading session in Asia. The Shanghai Composite initially fell after data showed China’s third-quarter gross domestic product was the weakest since the global financial crisis. Throughout the day, China’s economic czar, central-bank governor and banking and securities regulators all came out calling for confidence in China’s economic outlook. Shares rallied, with Shenzhen A Shares and the Shanghai Composite both up 2.6% after the intervention.
Regards,
Ted
