If U.S. Stocks Suffer Another Correction, Start Worrying

FYI: Over the weekend friends and family members asked Howard what was going on with the stock market. His answer was: How should I know?

As of Thursday’s (Oct. 11) close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.35% had fallen 6.6% from its Oct. 3 record high, the S&P 500 Index SPX, -0.59% had slid 6.9% and the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -0.88% had lost 9.6% from its Aug. 31 peak, near the 10% decline pundits usually define as a correction. (Stocks recovered Friday, but trading was mixed Monday.)

I’ll tell you a little secret: We commentators aren’t always 100% certain about what we write, and we often make our best guesses. Earlier this year, I was pretty convinced we were in a correction, not a new bear market. That turned out to be right. This time around, I’m not so sure.
Regards,
Ted
