The Closing Bell: U.S. Stocks In broad Retreat As S&P 500, Dow Set For Worst Day In 3 Months

FYI: U.S. stocks traded sharply lower Thursday as investors fretted over a rise in bond yields, which threatened to end a five-day rally for the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Both the S&P 500 and the Dow were on track for their worst sessions since late June and the Nasdaq tumbled by triple digits.

Nine of the 11 major S&P sectors were lower. The communication services sector .SPLRCL slumped 1.93 percent, with Alphabet (GOOGL.O) and Netflix (NFLX.O) dropping more than 2.5 percent each, while Facebook (FB.O) slid 2.80 percent.

Technology stocks .SPLRCT declined 2 percent and were the biggest drag on the markets. Apple (AAPL.O) fell 1.87 percent.

Healthcare .SPXHC and consumer discretionary .SPLRCD groups also lost more than 1 percent.

Some of the biggest names in technology came under pressure, with Netflix and Google parent Alphabet down 4% and 3.4%, respectively. Facebook and Amazon.com , meanwhile, shed more than 2% while Apple slipped 1.7%.

Consumer-focused shares such as Nike and Home Depot were among the biggest decliners in the Dow industrials, both losing more than 2%.

“We think Thursday’s market action is just market expectations catching up with where the Federal Reserve is projecting where it’s heading, as well as the strength in the U.S. economy relative to the rest of the world,” said Lisa Erickson, head of the Traditional Investment Group with U.S. Bank Wealth Management.

“As the Fed continues to raise interest rates, it’s going to make it harder for sectors like real estate and utilities that have traditionally been purchased more on a yield play basis.”

S&P 500 Sectors: Up/Down: Consumer Discretionary (D) Consumer Staples (D) Communication Services (D) Energy (D) Financials (U) Healthcare (D) Industrials (D) Materials (D) Real Estate (D) Technology (D) Utilities (U)
