Small-Cap Stocks May Be Sending a Bear-Market Signal: S&P 500 vs. S&P 600

FYI: The S&P SmallCap 600 index was up 1.0% on Wednesday afternoon, slightly bouncing back from its loss for September. But large caps are still far ahead, and that might signal market trouble.

The S&P 500 hit a new high in September, gaining 0.4%, while its sister index—the S&P SmallCap 600—lost 3.3%. Such a wide divergence is rare historically, according to Jodie Gunzberg from S&P Global.
