Because of government collusion, where the politicians control the utilities, having forced resident ratepayers into significantly and unreasonably high cost green options, and the refusal to bring clean burning natural gas into the state.
Breaking down your bill: Electric bills are made up of two components: delivery charges and power supply charges. Your power supply charge accounts for approximately one-quarter to one-third of your bill and is the only part of your bill that is affected by your choice of a competitive power supplier.
If this 1/4 of your bill is the cause of your rate being double that of other states, that means that you're paying 5 times as much for your power as other states.
(5 times as much on 1/4 of the total cost, plus the same amount on 3/4 of the cost equals 8/4 or double the cost.)
