Financial Pornography

Thanks to MFO poster @VintageFreak for acquainting me in another thread with a term I hadn’t heard before.

A Google search pulls up dozens of articles on “financial porn.” The term was apparently coined by financial writer Jayne Bryant Quinn decades ago. I think the linked article best capsulates the main idea. And I note sadly that many articles purporting to attack “financial porn” are little more than financial porn themselves - presented by unscrupulous investment advisors / companies in pursuit of your business.

“Financial pornography” is a statement, advertisement, or article regarding any specific class or type of financial product that is primarily intended to incite only an immediate, intense emotional reaction, typically omitting any substantive discussion of the pros and cons of the subject matter ...
