Jonathan Clements: Where We Stand: America’s Savings Habits
FYI: DURING THE 35 YEARS THROUGH 1984, the annual U.S. savings rate averaged 11.1% and never fell below 9%, according to Commerce Department figures. Since then, the annual savings rate has never been as high as 9%. From 1985 to 1998, it averaged just 7.3%. From 1999 to 2017, it was even worse, averaging a meager 4.8%.
