Navigating Choppy Markets

FYI: Financial advisor Drew Freides nabbed a big client last winter—by beating him in a sailboat race.

“You only bought your boat 2½ years ago, and now you’re best in class,” the impressed executive told Freides after the advisor prevailed. “Can you help me?”

Freides, whose background is in high-performance boat design, of all things, has a knack for helping clients sail through their financial lives. Together with the eight-person Freides Kanigher Group at UBS, the advisor manages $3.7 billion of assets for 87 ultrawealthy clients. He’s Barron’s 26th-ranked advisor in California.
