FYI: Running has been a big part of John Mowrey’s life. In middle school, he ran with his father on weekends, as the elder Mowrey trained for marathons. In college, John Mowrey ran track—and eventually met his wife running. It also helped him learn strategies that have come in handy as a value investor.
Early on, Mowrey took a contrarian approach to running races. Rather than powering out of the gate, he started in the middle to the back of the pack and sped up toward the later stages of a race when others were tiring. But he learned that the key to staying on strategy is flexibility. If he knew the field included runners who tended to start slow, as he preferred to do, he adjusted his approach, and if runners sprinted at the starter’s gun, he picked up his usual beginning pace.
At a time when value investing has been losing the race to growth, Mowrey has used a similar approach at the $1.1 billion AllianzGI NFJ Mid-Cap Value fund (ticker: PQNAX) that he co-lead manages.
