Small-Cap Stock Analysts Often Miss Mark

FYI: It’s the time of year when your inbox might get flooded with notes from research analysts recommending small-company stocks for 2018 that you’ve never heard of.

But a Barron’s analysis has found that over each of the past five years, analysts’ recommendations regarding small-caps on the NYSE and Nasdaq have had little to no power to predict returns over the following calendar year. In most cases, you could have done just as well by flipping a coin.
