FYI: In the first three quarters of 2017, specials totaled $30.6 billion globally, ahead of last year’s pace, according to Janus Henderson Investors. The firm tracks dividends paid by the 1,200 largest publicly traded companies around the world.
That may sound like a lot of money, but it pales in comparison to all of the dividends paid, mostly of the regular variety. And it’s a lot less than the estimated $129 billion Standard & Poor’s 500 companies spent on share buybacks in the third quarter alone, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices.
Special dividends accounted for 3% of all dividends through the first nine months of this year, the same percentage as last year, and down from 4% in 2015.
