Now it occurs to me that if they are dropped, a company must be added to the index. My best guess would be Amazon, given that they passed Walmart as the nation's largest retailer.

The damage done to GE BY GE has driven the price down. De-indexing it will be a triviality.
That said, were I on the DJ index committee and wanted to give GE the boot, the logical replacement kind-for-kind would be HON, wouldn't it?
