FYI (Yes, this is off-topic, but it's quality not tabloid junk!) This visualization represents the median household income in each county using data from the 2011-2015 ACS, a product of the U.S. Census Bureau. The dropdown lets you filter by state. A site I've been playing with for the past few weeks offers something similar, though rounded to the nearest $1K. But it has finer granularity - down to the zip code level.
A somewhat unusual feature is that it divides the US into "67 distinctive segments based on their socioeconomic and demographic composition". (Summary of segments, and multi-page description of each segment).
For each zip code, it gives the top three segments (mousing over the map gives the top segment).
Over the years, I've moved from renting in upscale, older and quiet "Suburban Periphery" areas to owning in young, active, "Principal Urban Centers". Specifically, neighborhoods characterized as "Laptops and Lattes".

It also gives age and population density views.
