FYI: London and its visitors will have to do without the city’s most iconic sound as Big Ben rang out for the last time — at least for a while.
When the bell in the Westminster clock pealed at 12 p.m. local time on Monday, it marked the last regular sounding of the hour for four years. That’s because the famous Great Clock and its home, the Elizabeth Tower, are undergoing conservation works, due to end in 2021. It means silence for Big Ben — which is the name of the bell inside the clock, though it’s commonly used for the landmark itself.
