FYI: An individual retirement account, or IRA, can be a handy way to save for retirement. But the majority of U.S. adults don't take advantage of IRAs' benefits.
Only 31% of American adults have an IRA, according to financial services firm TIAA. That's worse than 2016's ownership rate of 33%. And a paltry 5% of U.S. adults contribute more than $5,000 a year to IRAs.
Yet there are at least 12 top-notch reasons for you to use an IRA if you're not already, or to make better use of any IRA you do have.
