The logic for owning commodities is simple: They offer diversification to holdings of traditional stocks and bonds. Plus, investing in assets like sugar, heating oil, and livestock is made much easier via commodity exchange-traded funds, which are both liquid and inexpensive. Diversification has its downside, of course: Of the more than 90 exchange-traded commodity funds tracked by Morningstar, all have negative five-year trailing results. Also, while the logic for owning them may seem simple, the execution often is not.
