You don't know it is there and hopefully never need to use it.
I think these days you need one in the rear window to catch the people ramming you while they are texting.
Just today I saw a pick up stopped at the light get hit in the back by a car.
I added a string of LEDs to the rear of my pick up in the hopes it gets people's attention and they don't hit me.
